We didn't post an update here last week, but we posted a bigger update on Facebook instead. We started this medium as a way to consolidate updates and as a way to make sure we get the updates out to those who care during one of the toughest times in our history for conservative thought and "religious" views. But sometimes, it is just easier to post on the big tech.
Anyway, as a follower, you may know Evan finished up the roughest two weeks of his treatment (since induction) late last week. Those two weeks were truly brutal for the little guy. He tolerated them well, but as we found out, chemotherapy is not like the medications we have used for decades. The effects of the chemo are felt for weeks. Sometimes the effects crescendo a week or two after the last dose. Luckily Evan has had this week and will have next week off. No treatment, no visits. With years of looking at anemic people, I would guess his hemoglobin is probably about 7 or 8 and his platelets maybe about 75,000. These are very low values but "normal" for this two- week rest period. He is in good spirits, plays like a champ, and is doing great. But we have to walk a fine line as to when to call the doctor and take him in. If he was checked right now, he may need PRBC and platelets. But, other than tiring a bit easier and being a bit pale, he is asymptomatic. But we are watching. Always.
He can't wait to get back to normal. As you can imagine and if you have ever been ill yourself, there is nothing "normal" these days. We try to make life as normal as we can for him, but he knows the situation. Something a five year old shouldn't ever have to think about.
We celebrated Evan's birthday last Friday. A few friends came over and we had some good food. We had bounce houses for him and the other kids to enjoy. It was a great time. Mike from Bounce House Toledo was really great to work with. If anyone wants to rent some bounce houses for the kiddos, he is highly recommended.
Yesterday, I took him with me to an event for work. Chief Bingham was so great with Evan. He let him pull his first firehose and even crack the nozzle. He got to watch as the firefighters tore apart a car for training. It was pretty amazing for him.
See the video below I made in honor of Evan and his fight. We are so grateful for all the love and support as we continue through this. God is good and has been very good to us. We will praise Him.
